Ryan Reynolds hands over the mantle of Green Lantern to Nathan Fillion.
Fillion is set to play the role of a character-turned-alien in DC Studios’ upcoming Superman: Legacy, the film’s studio confirmed to CNN on Tuesday. (CNN and DC Studios are both part of Warner Bros. Discovery.)
The character of the Green Lantern in Legacy marks the studio’s next theatrical presentation of the intergalactic superhero after Reynolds, who played the title character in 2011’s Green Lantern.
Fillion is very familiar with the Green Lantern, having portrayed the superhero in at least ten different animated films between 2011 and 2020. In Legacy, he will portray the character for the first time on screen in a live-action film.
Fillion played TDK in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, also part of the DC Extended Universe and directed by James Gunn – the director of the new Superman: Legacy.

Reynolds’ Lantern was notoriously a mixed bag of reviews, with most critics judging the film as a whole. Reynolds even credited it himself in a way, in a hilarious parody at the end of 2018’s “Deadpool 2.” The silver lining to his role as Green Lantern is that he met Blake Lively in the film, and the couple later married in 2012 and now has four children together.

Gunn, who last year became co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, is at the helm of Superman: Legacy, which is touted as the starting point for DC Studios’ reimagining of the Superman Manor.
CNN confirmed in June that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress Rachel Brosnahan has been cast to play Lois Lane and that David Corenswet will play Superman in the new film.
Superman: Legacy hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
