Russia: 1.5 kilometers advanced in eastern Ukraine news

Russian forces advanced 1.5 kilometers towards the town of Lyman in eastern Ukraine, according to reports from Moscow. Soldiers repelled a Ukrainian offensive in the area, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Russian state television today. Russian units began a counter-attack and advanced “1.5 kilometers deep into a two kilometer front line” near Lyman.

Lyman was recaptured by the Ukrainian army in October 2022. The city is a major rail traffic hub and is located about 50 kilometers northeast of Kramatorsk, the main Ukrainian-controlled city in the east of the country. Last week, the Ukrainian army reported Russian attacks around Lyman.

Ukrainian troops continued to try to “break our defenses in different zones”, Shoigu said. The last two days have seen “waves of attacks”. Since the start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive in early June, “the enemy has not achieved its objectives in any zone,” Shoigu said.
