Vladimir Tarasenko wanted Rangers and nothing else

Senators and Vladimir Tarasenko discuss

The Ottawa Senators appear to be eyeing a player who can replace Alex DeBrincat’s offensive production.

During an interview with TSN 1200 Ottawa on Tuesday, general manager Pierre Dorion confirmed that he was in talks with the 31-year-old hockey player’s camp. However, the DG declined to say more.

Tarasenko is an unrestricted free agent and recently signed an eight-year deal totaling $60 million. He had signed that contract with the St. Louis Blues, but ended it under the colors of the New York Rangers.

The “Sens” finally traded DeBrincat last Sunday after several weeks of negotiations. Dorion grabbed forward Dominik Kubalik, candidate Donovan Sebrango, a conditional first-round pick in 2024 and a fourth-round speaker in the same year for the American Sharpshooter. This transaction also allowed the Ottawa team to free up approximately $5 million on its payroll for the 2023–2024 campaign.

With the Blues and Rangers last year, Tarasenko had 18 goals and 32 assists for 50 points in 69 games.

In addition, the Senators GM hinted that a settlement with Quebec goaltender Kevin Mandolese was “imminent.” The latter is a free agent with compensation.

Product of the Cape Breton Eagles, they played three games in the National League in 2022-23 and also played in the American League and the ECHL.
