Importance of the city in antiquity

The city was on the main highway connecting Mesopotamia to Egypt known as the Via Maris. It has been an important military and trading post since the Neolithic period and was the target of numerous disputes and attacks during the Bronze and Iron Ages. This is probably why it was also chosen as the site of the final battle between good and evil.

Some of the major battles that took place in the city of Megiddo were:

  • A war in the 15th century B.C. between that of Pharaoh Thutmosis III. ruled Egypt and a Canaanite coalition that resulted in Egypt controlling a large area of the eastern Mediterranean;
  • A millennium later, Megiddo was the scene of another battle between Neko II’s ruled Egypt and the kingdom of Judea, which ended in Egyptian victory.
  • More recently, in 1918, during World War I, the Ottoman army was defeated at Armageddon.

As battles raged and the city was rebuilt on the ruins of the previous settlement, it transformed into a large mound, first excavated between 1925 and 1929, revealing various civilizations that had lived there since the end of the Stone Age.

Several huge temples, luxurious palaces and ancient forts have been discovered in Armageddon. In addition, a secret underground tunnel was also found that carried water. Today the site is part of the Archaeological Zone of Megido National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a destination for many tourists.
