Nothing raises the spec sheet for its Phone (2)… and the price – 01net

More powerful but also significantly more expensive is the sketch of the Nothing Phone (2), which was launched a little less than a year after its predecessor. The smartphone continues to benefit from the original design of the first generation as well as an exceptional Android overlay.

Nothing today presented the second generation of its smartphone, which is simply christened Phone (2). Those who know the Phone (1) will not be surprised by the design of the device, which takes up the amazing key features of its predecessor: the transparent back allows LED filaments to light up to announce a notification or signal an alarm. These “glyphs,” as Nothing calls them, can also indicate battery status, volume performance, or simply serve as an extra light when recording a video.

Middle class flirting with the upper class

As well as the glowing timer, the user can also create their own glyph ringtones, a new feature of the phone (2). Developers can integrate these LEDs into their applications. From a distance, the two generations of the smartphone appear to be similar, but Nothing has improved in several respects: First, the screen, which is slightly larger (6.7 inches instead of 6.55 inches) and brighter (1,000 nits outdoors, twice as much). much like the first) is model). The refresh rate is also better distributed, it fluctuates between 1 and 120 Hz, which saves the battery – the phone (1) went from 60 to 120 Hz.

Nothing has also opted for a more powerful chip: Inside the Phone (2) beats a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 heart, i.e. last year’s top Android system-on-chip, and who still has it under control? The first version had a mid-range Snapdragon 778G+. The storage and RAM equipment also improves: 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage on the entry level, there are no changes but 12 + 256 and 12 + 512 configurations for the two additional levels.

There are also improvements in the photo system: on the front there is a Sony sensor with 32 MPX (16 MPX on the predecessor), which captures more light. On the rear, on the other hand, there are no major upheavals: the Phone (2) continues to integrate a duo of 50 MPX sensors, but with more advanced capabilities in HDR and zoom, thanks in particular to the photo processing made possible by the more powerful chip.

The battery has a capacity of 4,700 mAh, which is a bit more generous than the first version. Wired charging tops out at 45W (was 33W), with Qi support capped at 15W and reverse charging at 5W. The phone (2) runs on Android 13 with the in-house Nothing OS 2.0 overlay. The manufacturer promises three years of operating system updates and four years of software monitoring for security updates (that’s less than the five years promised by Samsung).

The Phone (2) starts at €679 in France, which is easily €210 more than the Phone (1) when it was launched. The more attractive spec sheet brings the smartphone perilously close to the high-end where the competition is significantly tougher. It also has to prove itself against a Pixel 7a, which sells for €509, and that’s a very good offer.
