  • A woman has caused outrage on TikTok for comparing trips to the Amalfi Coast to “handwork”.
  • Lexi Jordan said she had to travel by plane, train and ferry to visit the coast of southern Italy.
  • But people online said she didn’t pursue her research further, just watched a few videos on TikTok.

One American tourist likened traveling to the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy to “literally manual labor” — and people on TikTok aren’t happy about it.

Lexi Jordan, a Denver woman who vlogs about her travels and lifestyle, posted a video on TikTok criticizing content creators for only showing the positive aspects of visiting the Amalfi Coast while doing so Notice how difficult it was to travel there. The video, posted Tuesday, has since garnered nearly 400,000 views and more than 32,000 comments.

“Every single influencer and TikToker who has posted the Amalfi Coast on my For You page in the last two months deserves a jail sentence,” Jordan said in the video, adding that “it’s impossible to get here.”

Jordan said travel to the Amalfi Coast is complicated because tourists have to fly to Naples, a city in south-west Italy, before catching a train to Sorrento, a city about an hour’s drive away.

“Then you have to get on a ferry with all your luggage,” Jordan continued, adding that she had to stand in 30 degrees Celsius. She then had to climb 160 steps to see the Amalfi Coast because there were “no roads or moving cars.”

At the end of the video, Jordan said, “All the power is out because the Amalfi Coast doesn’t have the infrastructure to support this tourism.”

Dozens of users on TikTok called out Jordan for not doing any research before her trip to Italy.

“It’s pretty common knowledge that in Europe you should pack light and do a lot of walking and stair climbing,” wrote one user.

Another user commented: “Uh, I took a taxi from Naples to the hotel. At $150 it was expensive but worth it. You have to research outside and look at tik tokens lol.”

But several people agreed with Jordan that traveling to the Amalfi Coast is difficult, and one user wrote: “You are so brave to say that those steps in Positano almost killed me. I’ve thought about skipping meals to avoid them.”

Around 50 million people visited Italy in 2021, according to CEIC Data.

According to a US News & World Report travel guide, the Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations and is visited by around 5 million people each year. The hashtag #amalficoast has over a billion views on TikTok, and tourists post videos of their trips there almost every day.

Jordan didn’t immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
