Billie Eilish has released her homemade video for What Was I Made For?, her “sob-worthy” contribution to the All-Star Barbie soundtrack.
The video, filmed in one take, shows Eilish browsing a collection of Barbie clothes based on her own red carpet outfits. However, the elements – rain, wind, earthquakes – spoil the lonely game date.
“I think I’ve forgotten / How to be happy / Something I’m not / But something I can be / Something I’m waiting for / Something I was made for / Something I was made for am,” Eilish sings in the piano ballad, which she recorded with brother Finneas at his home studio in Los Angeles.
In a statement released minutes after the video premiered, Eilish wrote: “In January, Greta showed me and Finneas a handful of some unfinished scenes from the film; We had no idea what to expect with ALLL… we were so moved… that the next day we were writing and we CANNOT shut up lolll and we ended up writing almost the entire song that night . To be honest, this all seemed to come at a time when I really needed it. I’m so thankful for that. This video makes me cry. It means so much to me and I hope it means as much to you. Other than that I don’t have much to say, I think it will speak for itself.”
Eilish joins a star-studded group of artists whose music features on the record, which is being produced by Mark Ronson. Rolling Stone first announced the cast of musicians in May, which include Ava Max, Dominic Fike, Gayke, Haim, the Kid Laroi and Lizzo.
Since the announcement, Dua Lipa released Dance the Night, Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice released Barbie World, PinkPantheress released Angel, Karol G released Watati, and Charli XCX released Speed Drive.

“I don’t read a lot of scripts, but it was everything I wanted in a movie,” Ronson told Rolling Stone of working on the soundtrack. “I thought, ‘If I don’t get this gig, this will be my favorite movie of the year.’ ”
Barbie, the movie and the soundtrack will be released on July 21st.
