Guatemala’s TSE agrees to vote Torres and Arévalo

In his capacity as supreme authority on voting matters and fully respecting the principle of legality, he issued a statement declaring the validity of both political representatives who won the June 25 vote.

In this sense, the vote on August 20 will take place, respecting the will of the citizens expressed during the elections, between the two lists that obtained the most votes, the body in charge of the process stressed.

He reiterated his unwavering commitment to ensuring and defending the right to vote as a citizenship right and civic duty. “Without respect for the voice, there is no democracy,” he stressed.

In the face of any attempt to interfere in the electoral process through law enforcement or other means, the TSE will rely on the full validity of the constitutionally recognized democratic system of government, he noted.

Regarding the establishment, functioning and existence of legally constituted and recognized political parties, he recalled that the only applicable regulation in this matter is the Elections and Political Parties Act, which has constitutional status.

He called on all state institutions, political organizations and civil society in general to ensure the development of elections, the right to free elections and respect for the sovereign will of citizens.

Elections would be won or lost in the election, he stressed after the State Department searched the TSE Citizens Register on the morning following a court order disincorporating the Seed movement.

Confusion reigns on the country’s streets and while some are calling for calm and continuation of the stages ahead of the second round, others are calling for protest marches starting this afternoon.

Torres announced the suspension of the election campaign “in solidarity with the citizens who have come to vote, in solidarity with the will of the people,” he said.
