Greece suffocates, Thursday 13 July. Up to 44°C are expected in Athens at the weekend. The situation could last ten days.

In central Athens (Greece), shade is a rare and precious commodity. On Thursday morning, July 13, it was 39°C, up to 44°C are expected for the next two days. At the foot of the Acropolis, dehydrated tourists were evacuated by ambulance. Authorities plan to close access to the site during the hottest hours. “We get up early in the morning to visit each other. Because we know that after 10 a.m. it’s very difficult to stay out,” says a tourist.

Change in public and private sector opening hours

Everyone protects themselves as best they can: under an umbrella, in the shelter of a fan, or in the shelter of a park bench. The Mediterranean heatwave is expected to hit Greece for six days. Hospitals are on alert and civil protection is alerting passers-by to the risks of prolonged exposure to the heat. “We will distribute at least 30,000 50cl bottles of water,” said Antonios Avgerinos, President of the Greek Red Cross. The Greek state is also considering the possibility of changing the opening hours of the public and private sectors. According to the United Nations, last week was the world’s hottest on record.
