Innovative transportation system proposed for El Salvador

Korea is proposing a monorail and cable car as a mass transit system, El Mundo newspaper said, addressing one of the issues that concern Salvadorans most in their capital: transportation, vehicle density and the resulting pollution.

Koica’s plan has four components: public transportation, road network, road safety and non-motorized transportation, with a proposed budget of $2,229.28 million.

The company is proposing the construction of a monorail and cable car as a mass transit system for the San Salvador metropolitan area to move Salvadorans from the east to the west of Greater San Salvador (Monorraíl).

In the meantime, the planned cable car system will work in different communities to connect San Salvador through different lines and would undoubtedly bring great ease in transportation in the capital.

Also, it is proposed to connect a cable car from the Masferrer Ring to the San Salvador Volcano, an area where the government is promoting tourism.

“We make the proposal and understand that the government plans to build a monorail in 2029,” the South Korean authority was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Koica’s ambitious plan also includes connecting part of the monorail to the Tren del Pacífico. Before that, however, work must be done between 2023 and 2028 to consolidate a system that will allow these new components to be connected.

The plan aims to “create an efficient, safe and sustainable transport system,” according to the document, which was handed to authorities at the Ministry of Public Works on July 4 at a hotel in the capital.

Another innovative point in the master plan, along with many other measures, is the installation of a public bicycle system for mobilization in the greater San Salvador area. After the signaling projects, street education focused on the use of this medium and the construction of more cycle lane infrastructure.
