Up to 3,000 American reservists could be deployed on the old continent, announced Joe Biden, who wants to strengthen the US presence in Europe as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve.
More US Army reservists in Europe? This is the decision Joe Biden made Thursday to strengthen NATO in the Old Continent, more than 500 days after the start of the war in Ukraine.
“I consider it necessary to increase the presence of the United States armed forces for the proper conduct of Operation Atlantic Resolve,” wrote the American President in a document published on the White House website.
This operation, carried out by Washington and its allies since 2014, “allows to test the mechanisms of coordination and military mobility between European countries”, explained the Armies General Staff in 2020, when an American ship had landed in the port of La Rochelle.
According to the order signed by Joe Biden, up to 3,000 reservists can be mobilized. Politico emphasizes that it is not specified when and where exactly they will be used in Europe.
Thousands of American soldiers in the Old Continent
It is not the first time since the beginning of the war in Ukraine that Washington has sent troops to the old continent. Up to 8,500 soldiers were already stationed in Europe to strengthen NATO before the conflict between Moscow and Kiev began.
Politico states that after the war began, 20,000 additional soldiers were sent to various countries in Europe.
This Thursday, during a trip to Finland, US President Joe Biden also reiterated his support for Ukraine after meeting Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the NATO summit in Vilnius.
“I hope and expect that Ukraine will make significant progress on its offensive and eventually lead to a negotiated settlement,” the White House tenant said.
