The Cerberus anticyclone is reaching southern Europe and temperatures will soar
Southern Europe is bracing for more temperature increases, but locals aren’t the only ones struggling with the heat. At Madrid Zoo and other zoos in the region, staff work hard to keep the animals cool. For some it’s frozen treats, for others it’s light sprinkling.
Maria Delclaux, in charge of land mammals, tells us:
“You have to keep in mind that they have shade, pools and showers and don’t try too hard. In that sense, they might be smarter than us. They don’t work in the sun, that’s one of the recommendations to follow in case of a heat wave. So what they do is more natural.
The countries around the Mediterranean Sea and the southern Balkans are expected to be the regions hardest hit by the African anticyclone Cerberus. Meteorologists are announcing temperatures of up to 48 degrees for this Friday in Sicily and Sardinia.
In some urban areas, authorities are implementing heatwave contingency plans, particularly through working time reductions and telephone alerts.
This heat wave comes at a time when other parts of Europe are recovering from extreme weather conditions of a different nature.
Austria was one of many countries hit by severe weather in recent days, bringing high winds and flooding.
