The Dominican Senate will resume reform of the Accounts Chambers Act

Local media said the bill is pending second reading after the 17 congressmen required by regulations to hold a session were absent that day.

If the changes proposed by MP Félix Bautista are approved in the Senate, they will be sent to the Chamber of Deputies for promulgation, and then to the Executive Branch.

Broadly, the proposal is to change the law that governs the Chamber of Accounts to give its president greater powers, require the publication of all audits, and penalize officials who file documents illegally.

The debates are taking place as a special commission of the Chamber of Deputies found this week that the plenary session of this auditing body has violated various laws and regulations in the performance of its duties.

When disclosing the results of the investigation, the deputies stated that after examining the statements contained in the minutes of the interviews conducted and examining all the documents, they discovered about 13 serious crimes.

The Legislative Bloc of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) last Wednesday supported the Commission of Inquiry’s recommendation to proceed with the impeachment of the Accounts Chamber.

PRM spokesman in the Chamber of Deputies, Julio Fulcar, claimed that the bloc, as expressed by the top leadership of this political organization, supports the proposals to bring the officials of this body to trial.
