Ethiopia reaffirmed its commitment to equitable use of the Nile

Ahmed, in a message published on his Twitter account, stressed that honesty and keeping promises are good and well-known qualities of Ethiopians and the pillars of the country’s foreign policy, and therefore there is no intention to harm its neighbors.

“Our development needs in upstream and downstream countries are multiplying due to population growth, and this encourages Egypt and Ethiopia to work together to achieve their sustainable development goals,” he stressed.

He stressed that constant communication with the leaders of downstream countries is a real expression of the desire to strengthen fraternal relations and cooperation.

“We commend the wise leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his tireless efforts to build and develop the Arab Republic of Egypt, and we believe that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will bring great benefits to all,” the publication continues.

He believed that the efficient storage of Nile water in the reservoir of the dam was the best guarantee for everyone during the droughts in difficult seasons.

“We express our commitment to work together on important projects aimed at ensuring the sustainable development of our peoples on a win-win basis,” he concluded.

Ahmed spoke to El-Sisi about GERD in Cairo last Thursday, on the sidelines of a summit meeting of neighboring countries in coordination with the African Union and the Arab League to deal with the crisis in Sudan.

The parties agreed to start expedited negotiations to finalize the deal between the two countries and Sudan on filling the dam after discussing means to break the current deadlock on agreements on the issue, which include operating rules had.

Likewise, they decided to make all necessary efforts to complete the negotiations within four months, an official statement said.

During this period, Addis Ababa expressed its pledge not to cause significant damage to Egypt and Sudan during the filling of the hydraulic engineering project in the 2023-2024 water year so that it can meet the water needs of both countries.

According to the text released by the Office of the Ethiopian Prime Minister, both parties “reaffirmed their common political will to strengthen the ties between their two countries politically, economically and culturally, based on a common desire to realize their common interests and the prosperity of both sister nations.” “.
