Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 33 years after adopting the country’s declaration of sovereignty, highlighted Ukraine’s strength in resisting Russia’s war of aggression. “Our country will never give up its sovereignty. That is clear to everyone in the world,” he said in his daily video message on Sunday night. Let’s celebrate a free Ukraine. Zelenskyy again thanked the named soldiers who fought for the country.
On July 16, 1990, the Ukrainian parliament approved a document on the independence of the country, which was still part of the Soviet Union at the time. According to the document at the time, the country should have its own army and its own national bank, but it should not have nuclear weapons and be non-aligned. Zelenskyi also said in his speech that Ukraine will defend its freedom regardless of Russia’s terror.
In 1991, the country declared its independence, which resulted in the collapse of the Soviet Union. Zelenskyy sees Ukraine as a model and pioneer of freedom and democracy in Europe. “Ukraine will guarantee true freedom and security from Russian terror across Europe. Our continent’s security starts here with Ukraine’s sovereignty and strength.”
