On August 13, ComediHa! presents a gala moderated by Michel Courtemanche. The guests have been announced: Stéphane Raymond, Alain Choquette, Claude Legault, Alexandre Bisaillon, Réal Béland, Didier Lucien, David Beaucage, Marc Dupré, Christophe Dupéré, Mario Jean, Colin Boudrias and Martin Petit.
Isn’t there something wrong? It seems to me that it is obvious.
Why are there no women under these names? Has anyone in the organization noticed?
I read in 24 hours the words of Emna Achour, a comedian who is part of the women’s collective behind the Instagram page @pasdefillesurlepacing: “ComediHa! which is the second largest festival [d’humour] in Quebec, which is really the only country hosting galas this year […]without embarrassment, they form a lineup of 12 men and 0 women.”
I totally agree with her when she says that this situation in 2023 is unacceptable.
Still a lot of work
I know, I’ve been connected to the world of humor for many years: even if it’s gradually getting better, there is still a lot to do in the world of humor for female comedians to be represented at their fair value.
The ComedyHa! Next August 13th is a good reminder of that. I seriously thought that an organization of this size would have known this for a long time.
Such a situation is detrimental to our collective ascension to a society where women have equal opportunities to exude humor as men.
And for those who think it’s hard to find quality female comedians in Quebec, I encourage you to take a closer look at the emerging female comedians in this milieu.
All fun little girls in Quebec deserve to feel like the dream of becoming a great comedian hosting galas is as accessible to them as it is to little boys.
