It was that good old Québécois proverb, a bit vulgar, that I thought of when I was stunned to discover the recent controversy stirring up the small Québécois cultural milieu.
A young author with no credit whatsoever who calls a Prime Minister who praises his work “shabby”. The world is upside down!
Where is the idea of saying “thank you” to someone who praises us?

We know that Prime Minister François Legault likes to read. On Friday at the funeral home, before Denise Bombardier’s funeral, the Prime Minister shared his latest literary discovery with some of the journalist’s friends. He spoke so enthusiastically about this book that we all wanted to go straight to the nearest bookstore to buy it. He spoke so passionately about this book that I encouraged him to talk about it on his social media. “I will definitely do it on Saturday morning,” the Prime Minister replied. Thing promised, thing due. On Saturday, the Prime Minister wrote on Facebook congratulating him on Kevin Lambert’s That Our Joy Remains. “Nuanced criticism of the Quebec bourgeoisie. Pressure groups and journalists are looking for scapegoats for the housing crisis in Montreal. The difficulty of debates in our society. Well researched architectural novel. Long breathless sentences. A 30-year-old writer with a lot of talent.”
You will find that the Prime Minister spoke of “differentiated criticism”. Well, the author did exactly the opposite when responding to Legault’s post!
Kevin Lambert, who had just received a rave review from the Prime Minister, replied that getting his book out “sucked”.
ayoy! For the nuances we will go back. Kevin Lambert has every right to criticize the CAQ’s policy on public housing, but the least courtesy and courtesy is to first say thank you to anyone who compliments us. But when you’re brought up badly, you don’t even thank people who tell you that you have “a lot of talent.”
Then Kevin Lambert proceeded to pelt Legault with comments so scathing they were ridiculous. He spoke to the prime minister about the “destructive, pro-poor, anti-immigrant, pro-landlord, pro-rich policies.” [son] Government.”
“Anti-immigrant policy”? But where does that come from?
It must be done: while the Prime Minister made me want to read Kevin Lambert’s book, Lambert himself made me want to flip through it! If this author is so subtle in his analysis, what credibility does his book have?
Spitting in the soup like that is petty, it is petty. As if Legault had the plague and getting a compliment from him would be a kiss of death.

That’s what surprises me about some under 30’s, how quickly they can draw and judge others from above. But on the basis of what moral superiority?
Call me “old fashioned” if you like, but since my son was little I’ve taught him to say “thank you” whenever someone compliments him.
On the contrary, isn’t that a bit… shabby?
