Colombian President Proposes Changing World Financial System

At the meeting as part of the III. At the European Union-Community of Latin American and Caribbean (EU-Celac) Leaders Summit, Petro stressed that the global financial system was not designed to plan a transition towards a decarbonized economy.

“There can be no transition to a decarbonized economy on the scale needed to save lives on the planet if there is no articulation and planning in public authorities,” he stressed.

Decarbonization is the process of reducing carbon emissions, particularly carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere. The aim is to achieve a low-emission global economy through the energy transition that achieves carbon neutrality.

According to the Colombian ruler, this change is essential to save life on the planet, especially human existence.

Petro referred to Colombia’s proposal to swap debt for climate protection, leading to a transformation of the world financial system based on reforms of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, among others.

He emphasized that the path to decarbonizing the economy also requires changes in the conception of public powers.

“If there is no articulation of public powers; “Unless there is planning from these authorities, there cannot be a transition to a decarbonized economy on the scale required to save lives on the planet,” he said.

Progressivism “must be easy,” Petro said at the meeting, which was also attended by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez; Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa; including the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and that of Chile, Gabriel Boric.

“One of the things for which a progressive position, for all its inner diversity, is most criticized is that it mimics the right and espouses positions that have to do with the history of the right, and hence the society that it is, denies.” “In a dark and critical world, there is an opportunity to see alternatives,” he said.
