An American soldier has been arrested in North Korea. The man crossed the fortified demarcation line that separates North and South Korea during a border tour and was arrested, as reported today by the UN and the South Korean news agency Yonhap. First there was talk of a generic American citizen: A US official later told CNN that he was a soldier. In a press conference at the Pentagon, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin confirmed that the soldier “voluntarily crossed the border into North Korea and is now in the custody of Pyongyang authorities while on tour.”
UN: “We are working to solve the problem”
“A US citizen crossed the military demarcation line into the DPRK without permission while on an orientation tour of the Common Security Zone.” This was first reported by the UN command, which added: “We believe he is currently in North Korean custody and are working with our colleagues in the KPA (the North Korean military) to investigate this incident.”
