The well-known caricaturist Francis Desharnais drew more than a hundred drawings during the festival.
His sketches of Monday’s memorable Cowboys Fringants concert let you feel all the emotions that enveloped the Plains of Abraham, on stage and in the crowd.
“I’m interested in the atmosphere,” explains Francis Desharnais, whom Le Journal met between shows at the Parc de la Francophonie.
“I’m not the biggest music lover in the world, but I love the atmosphere at FEQ. I try to capture that with my quick sketches. That’s why I’m going fast. I want to capture many things. I want the rawest design.”
The Quebec artist is a regular at the Festival d’été. From 2009 to the middle of the following decade he drew festival concerts which he then published on his personal blog and then on a FEQ blog.
After a hiatus, he started drawing the FEQ again three years ago, using Instagram as a dissemination platform.
“This year I tried to get a media pass but was told no because it comes with one condition. On the other hand, I got a VIP pass and we made a cooperation agreement. That’s what I want,” he explains.
A FEQ comic
This is how Francis Desharnais’ drawings are used by the Festival d’été on its social networks.
Although the two projects are unrelated, the artist intends to use them as the basis for a comic book project about the FEQ.
Which artist would he most like to draw in 2023? The Budos Band.
“I didn’t know them and they all look sick, have big beards, big instruments, biker express trains, the music is turned upside down. I had a crush on drawings and music.”
