The case of the agreements, protagonist of the investigation launched by the Chilean Public Prosecutor’s Office into the transfer of multi-million dollar state funds to charitable foundations mainly linked to a broad front party, Revolución Democrática, DR, has experienced a surprising new chapter this Thursday. A group of three criminals last night stole 23 computers and a safe from the Ministry for Social Development, the department headed by Minister Giorgio Jackson, founder and leader of the DR and part of Boric’s trust ring. “We find it quite suspicious that incidents of this nature are occurring, which appear not only to be a robbery but also linked to a political signal.” Don’t let situations intimidate you, but continue our work as a ministry,” said the minister from the south of the country.
Jackson clarified that the teams’ information was secure and was the first authority to link this wrongful act to the Agreements case. “Let the people behind these criminal acts know that we have backup copies of the information related to the agreements. “I have instructed the Department for Social Development so that we have the details of the agreements from 2017 to date,” the foreign minister said.
The robbery occurred on Wednesday night when a ministry security guard on Catedral Street in central Santiago de Chile received a call from a man posing as Minister Jackson. According to the police, the person assured him that he had been in an accident in the municipality of San Bernardo, south of the capital, and that 50 computers had to be collected, which three nephews would take away. The security guard collected 23 pieces of equipment and distributed them to the subjects, who arrived at the building and hid their faces with masks. The security guard then received a second call from the alleged Secretary Jackson, who informed him that the same three people were fumigation and removing a safe located on the fifth floor. “They arrive in a vehicle and when they get out they wear white overalls,” said the commander of the Carabineros, Juan Andrés Balboa. After the events, the same security guard called the carabineros to make a report.
“It’s a very unusual situation. Just the fact that a call came in that night asking for these things is in a way extraordinary,” Balboa said Thursday morning.
Jackson assured that he is coordinating with the Department of the Interior, headed by Carolina Tohá, to file the necessary complaints and that they will continue to collect all background information to solve “the crimes that constitute theft, identity theft and also name misuse.” “Hopefully the judiciary will establish as soon as possible who the people who committed this very serious crime were,” the foreign minister said.
The Fall Agreements was published in mid-June. The Regional Ministerial Secretariat of the Housing Ministry in Antofagasta, in the north of the country, has struck an agreement with the RD Party-affiliated foundation Democracia Viva, providing for a direct transfer of around $530,000 in government funds. The public prosecutor’s office investigates, among other things, the offenses of exerting influence, incompatible negotiations and tax fraud. The storyline extends to other foundations in different regions of the country, even stretching to previous presidential terms. There are at least five who have yielded to their political responsibilities: a key DR MP – Catalina Pérez, who had to step down from the vice presidency of the Chamber of Deputies – the one who was her friend, the one who had been her adviser, the number two in the Ministry of Housing and Regional Secretary of the same department, all members of the RD party.
The Chilean government is investigating whether there was “complicity” in the robbery and, through Undersecretary for Crime Prevention Eduardo Vergara, has announced an audit of the private security company handling the downtown building.
