Quebec’s Gabriel Diallo lost in the first round of the Newport tournament on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to South African Kevin Anderson. The veteran won in 54 minutes.
At 37, Anderson returns to competition in Newport. He retired from professional tennis in March 2022 after the Miami Masters 1000.
Whoever received an invitation to the event in Rhode Island won, balls in hand. He had 11 aces and won 88% of the rallies played on his first serve. He also broke the Montreal native five times.
For his part, Diallo failed to capitalize on the only break ball he bid himself. He also struggled on serve, as he only managed 53% of his first serves.
In the second round, Anderson has an appointment with Dutchman Gijs Brouwer. The latter defeated the competition’s sixth seed, Australia’s Max Purcell.
