Ukrainian drone strike sets fire to ammunition depot in central Crimea

The governor of the Russian-controlled region reports that Ukrainian drone strikes set an ammunition depot on fire.

A Ukrainian drone strike north of Simferopol, in the center of the Crimean peninsula, set fire to an ammunition depot. Russian long-distance trains also had to be stopped because of the attack, as announced by the Russian-appointed governor of the region, Sergei Aksjonov. The bridge over the Kerch Strait, which connects the peninsula to the mainland, was also temporarily closed for security reasons.

“An enemy drone attacked the Krasnogvardeysk district. As a result of an almost similar situation in the district, there was an ammunition detonation in a depot. Considering the situation, I decided to evacuate the population within a radius of 5 kilometers,” said Sergey Aksyonov, regional governor of the region.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously claimed that the bridge linking the Crimean peninsula to Russia would bring “war instead of peace” and was therefore a military target. The bridge was the latest target of an attack on Monday, killing two people. It was only in October that it was severely damaged in a similar attack and closed for ongoing repairs.

Russia supplies its troops in southern Ukraine via Crimea. Ukraine is therefore trying to cut supplies to the Russian army. It is not the first time that Ukraine has attacked ammunition depots.
