Mega Millions jackpot grows to $820 million with a potential cash payout of $422 million

Mega Millions upped the stakes by another $100 million.

The winning numbers for the $720 million Mega Millions jackpot were announced Friday night. The numbers were 29, 40, 47, 50 and 57 and a Megaball of 25.

But the absence of a jackpot winner in the final drawing of the lottery game on Friday night pushed the top prize for the next drawing, which will be held on Tuesday, to an estimated $820 million. Almost all of the grand prize winners opt for a cash payout, which is estimated to be worth $422 million in Tuesday’s drawing.

The potential jackpot is the fifth largest in the game’s history, Mega Millions said in a statement early Saturday.

There was no immediate news as to whether jackpot winning tickets were being sold.

The jackpot rose after there was no winner in Tuesday’s $640 million draw. There hasn’t been a Mega Millions jackpot winner since April 18th.

Friday’s jackpot is now the fifth largest in Mega Millions history. A potential winner would have the choice of an estimated pre-tax lump sum payment of $370.5 million or the annuity option, which consists of an immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments.

Friday’s drawing featured eight entries of five cue balls for a prize of $1 million. Two each were sold in Florida, New Jersey and North Carolina, one in California and one in Michigan, Mega Millions said.

There have been four Mega Millions jackpots over $1 billion, the largest being a $1.537 billion jackpot in October 2018 where a single winning ticket was sold in South Carolina.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are approximately one in 302.58 million.
