Margot Robbie’s Barbie waves to the citizens of Barbieland in Barbie. Warner Bros. Pictures
- Barbie had the highest-grossing opening day of 2023, grossing over $70 million at the box office.
- The film is on track to become one of the biggest opening weekends of 2023 by Sunday.
- “Barbie” could also break records for the largest opening weekend for a film directed by a woman.
Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” film has already set records for the highest-grossing opening day of 2023. Now he could be on track to set the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a film directed by a woman, reports Variety.
Between Thursday, which Variety says sold the most preview tickets of 2023 — over $22 million — and Friday, which Variety says sells nearly $50 million, the film quickly surpassed the opening record of just over $51 million set by Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse.
Previous estimates by Forbes put “Barbie” at about $110 million in its opening weekend — a goal that the film is already more than halfway to achieving based on Friday sales alone. If Barbie actually does hit the $110 million mark, it will be the fifth-biggest release of the year, after opening weekends of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $146 million; Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, which grossed $120.5 million; Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which grossed $118.4 million; and Disney’s The Little Mermaid, which grossed about $118 million over the Memorial Day long weekend, according to Forbes.
Even more impressively, it will be the highest-grossing weekend premiere by a female director, a record previously held by Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman,” which grossed $100.5 million in its opening weekend.
The numbers will be a huge hit for Gerwig, who was full of anticipation of the film’s release in an interview with The Guardian in early July.
“I’m just so nervous. I am so nervous. I’m excited! But I’m so nervous,” Gerwig told the outlet. “I just can’t believe it, here it is… let’s go!”
