The Mother of God as a child with her parents Ana and Joaquim, Jesus’ grandparents.
On World Grandparents and Elderly Day, July 23, we are called to spend more time with the elderly. On this day, the Holy Father invites people to become aware of the importance of the elderly in the life of society.
This world day was celebrated for the first time in 2021. It takes place annually on the fourth Sunday of July, around the commemoration of Saints Anna and Joachim, parents of the Mother of God and therefore grandparents of Jesus.
The theme of this year’s 3rd World Day of Older Persons is “His mercy to all generations” (Lk 1:50). The achievements of the elderly for our society are irreplaceable. In the post-war period, it was precisely the older generation that made a significant contribution to the development of the state and our prosperity, with many sacrifices. This is why the willingness of seniors to get involved in society is still very high today. Volunteer activities are written for them. Clubs value that a lot.
And where would society be without grandparents who are there for their grandchildren? It connects the elderly with the young. It also keeps you young. They feel needed and support their children and grandchildren materially and immaterially. Then there is the health conscious lifestyle. For them, regular contact with other people and healthier eating are particularly important.
Thus, older fellow citizens have been given a rejuvenated face by social change, which means that they perceive their status in society and the ensuing tasks in a contemporary and renewed way.
