Raising the Claret Jug to close the 151st Open Championship on Sunday could be the most anticipated moment of the season for some of the world’s best golfers. The 2023 Open at Royal Liverpool – where Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are the last two winners – has an even longer list of iconic winners at the venue, including Peter Thomson, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen.
The R&A has increased its budget for this year’s event, increasing to $16.5 million from last year’s payout at the Old Course in St. Andrews from $14 million, an increase of 18%. Nevertheless, it is the smallest winner of the four major championships.
- Masters: $18 million
- PGA Championship: $17.5 million
- US Open: $20 million
- Open Championship: $16.5 million
“Our aim is to ensure The Open remains at the forefront of world golf and we have nearly doubled the prize money since 2016,” said R&A CEO Martin Slumbers. “As we see significant increases in prize money in men’s professional sports, we are delivering on our broader commitment to the sport by enhancing the AIG Women’s Open, strengthening pathways in elite amateur play and encouraging more people around the world to play golf. We believe that getting the balance right is critical to the long-term future of the sport.”
In 2016, the total prize money paid out was $8.5 million. Because of the exchange rate, it was even higher in 2014 when McIlroy won his third major league with Royal Liverpool. The purse totaled over $9.2 million this week.
