Taylor Swift was just warming up. The world’s biggest pop star had just played through “Cruel Summer” — a 4-year-old electro-pop banger that’s arguably this summer’s song — with a little help from a sold-out Saturday night crowd at Lumen Field ready to scream every line when she decided to have a little fun.
Without saying a word, Swift pointed to parts of the crowd, which she put at 72,000, who would erupt like audible geysers on her queen’s orders. “This could go to my head,” Swift said playfully. “You just made me feel so powerful, you know what I mean?”
It was a tongue-in-cheek staging for a booming “The Man” — a joyful, stomping rebuke of sexist double standards — in which Swift roared across a gigantic, office-style stage, nudging her battalion of business-suited dancers while her sequined jacket and boots glittered in the fading sunlight.
From the opening stretch of Swift’s Era’s tour, for which the anticipation was almost unprecedented, Swift was ready to shoot to kill you with a look while the stadium exploded at every pose or lick of her bright red lips. The three and a half hour marathon was just getting underway and it was already clear that fans were in for an evening of entertainment from the biggest and greatest.
