“People are trapped, but we don’t know the number,” said a fire service spokesman, while minutes later the police spokesman said there were “injured” people.
The public television channel ERT said that five people were seriously injured, but this information has not been confirmed by the authorities at this time.
A large-scale rescue operation with fire brigade and ambulance on site is underway.
The reasons for the collapse are currently unknown. The bridge is on the road connecting the port of Patras in the Peloponnese peninsula (south-west) with Athens.
