Just like Lana Del Rey’s apparent new job as a waitress at an Alabama Waffle House, late-night icon David Letterman got a new job…sort of.

On Friday, the former “Late Night with David Letterman” host stopped by a Hy-Vee grocery store in Iowa, where he was seen wearing an apron and his very own name tag in a photo posted to the store’s Facebook page.

“You never know who you might meet when you’re strolling down the aisles at Hy-Vee,” read the caption.

In a video posted to Letterman’s Instagram page on Sunday, he can be seen telling the store manager that he “spent a significant portion of my life in a grocery store in Indianapolis and it was the last of the single independently owned grocery store and I really liked it.”

“And if I can give something back to the marketing community, I’d love to – but obviously I don’t have all day,” he joked.

In the video, Letterman can be seen strolling the aisles of the Hy-Vee, packing groceries, eating uncooked minestrone soup and telling customers over the loudspeaker that celery is free “today and only today.”

Letterman was reportedly in Des Moines over the weekend to compete in the Hy-Vee IndyCar race, where Christian Lundgaard drove the #45 race car — which Letterman owns through his team, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing — but he appeared to have done a quick shift in the Hy-Vee before the start of the weekend’s celebrations.

While Letterman’s move in markets seems motivated by his race team’s participation in the weekend’s big race, it remains unclear why Del Rey was in Alabama.

Videos last week circulated on social media showing the singer donning a Waffle House uniform while serving customers behind the counter.

She was reportedly spotted recently at a nail salon and Starbucks in the area, and was even spotted in a parking lot signing a poster of the same name for a fan while wearing her Waffle House uniform, as seen in one photo Video posted on social media on Saturday.

CNN has reached out to the singer’s rep for comment.

Letterman and Del Rey aren’t the only famous faces who have surprised guests as unsuspecting employees in recent months.

Academy Award-winning actor-director Ben Affleck worked a shift at Dunkin’ earlier this year to shoot a hilarious Super Bowl LVII commercial, and Ariana Maddix of Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules” worked a shift at the drive-thru window sill at Raising Cane in Southern California in May.
