Israel’s parliament is expected to vote on a key element of the government’s controversial plans to restructure the judiciary on Monday. The Knesset in Jerusalem met for a marathon on Sunday to discuss the bill. The final vote is not expected before Monday afternoon. Efforts to reach an agreement continued in the background on Sunday.

All previous negotiations between the right-wing coalition and the opposition have so far been unsuccessful. For more than six months, the project divided large sections of Israeli society. Thousands regularly take to the streets against the weakening of the judiciary. Recently, resistance within the military has also increased. The law is part of a larger package that critics see as a threat to Israel’s democracy.
