Bjørnar Moxnes had invoked thoughtlessness to justify the flight, which took place at Oslo Airport on June 30, but has changed his version several times over the course of the revelations.
Norway’s far-left leader and MP Bjørnar Moxnes resigned as leader of his party on Monday July 24 after he was caught stealing designer sunglasses from a shop at Oslo Airport.
“I made a big mistake and made it worse by the way I dealt with it afterwards,” wrote Bjørnar Moxnes on his Facebook page. “I’m really sorry about that and I want to apologize.”

On June 30, Bjørnar Moxnes said he had been fined 3,000 kroner ($250) for taking a pair of Hugo Boss sunglasses worth 1,199 kronor (about $110) from a duty-free shop at Oslo Airport two weeks earlier. The 41-year-old politician had claimed he was thoughtless, but has changed his position several times in light of the revelations surrounding the episode, which were captured by CCTV cameras, which seems to invalidate the hypothesis of an accident.
Bjørnar Moxnes is currently on sick leave and is stepping down from his post at the helm of the opposition Rødt (‘Red’ in French) party, which he led and helped build for 11 years before winning seven seats in parliament in the 2021 general election. According to the rules in force in Norway, it is not possible to waive elective functions such as that of a deputy during the term of office. Until then, the party’s number two, Marie Sneve Martinussen, 37, will temporarily take over the leadership of the formation.
