Surfer escapes death after battling a great white shark

According to The Independent, a surfer has escaped death after being attacked by a great white shark.

The man, in his 20s, swam 600m to shore after being attacked by a shark in the Margaret River area south of Perth, Australia, on Monday.

He then sought help at a nearby coffee shop, where an off-duty nurse was able to provide first aid, The West Australian reported.

According to The Independent, the young man is currently being treated in hospital and is now in stable condition.

Authorities don’t know the size of the shark, but after speaking to witnesses, believe it was a great white shark.

Witnesses told 9News the surfer lost a lot of blood and praised the man’s courage.

The Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development (DPIRD) warned swimmers to “exercise caution,” while Augusta Margaret River County confirmed other local beaches between Gas Bay and the Margaret River Estuary are closed until further notice.
