  • Murat Arpapay is believed to have been tied to a chair and killed with a lethal injection

This is the moment a Briton was allegedly led to his death by a 19-year-old “honey trap” in an alleged assassination plot in Turkey.

The body of Murat Arpapay, who worked as a translator in Istanbul after growing up in the UK, was found by locals in the ventilation shaft of a rented apartment in the city on July 27.

According to the Turkish police, experts believe that the 57-year-old, who was sent money by his family in England, was killed by lethal injection after being tied to a chair.

Local media reports that Mr Arpapay made friends online in the Sirinevler district before meeting them in person and falling in love with one of them, a teenager named Muhterem Percikli.

CCTV footage has been released showing Mr Arpapay, whose Facebook page suggests he studied at Newcastle College, arriving at an apartment building with the woman he believed to be his new lover.

Percikli has since been arrested by police and four other people believed to be involved in the plot to kill him and steal his money have been named, reports CNN Turk.

Police say after Mr Arpapay and Percikli entered the rented apartment, three other people walked in shortly after – Serpil Demir, Dogan Sariyildiz and Fatih Erginoglu. A fifth suspect was later identified as Ersen Basak.

According to local media, the suspects told officers that Mr Arpapay had lived in England for many years and was funded by his family.

It is believed that Mr Arpapay had been in touch with Basak via social media before they met in person prior to his move to Turkey.

It is believed that Basak then hatched a plan to steal money from the victim’s house, asking Percikli and her friend Demir for help.

The couple visited a Basak coffee shop to meet Mr Arpapay, which then led to an alleged relationship between Percikli and Mr Arpapay.

According to CCN Turk, on the day of his killing, July 26, Mr Arpapay and Percikli went to his rental apartment in Sirinevler, where he was beaten and knocked unconscious after the group handcuffed him.

The publication said he was then killed by having a chemical injected into his body before the gang dumped his body down an air vent, where it was discovered the next morning.

After the autopsy report, the police launched an investigation and discovered CCTV footage showing Mr Arpapay having arrived at the apartment building with his alleged partner Percikli

In the meantime, it is understood that the group went to Mr Arpapay’s house in Istanbul’s Bahcelievler district and stole money that was inside.

Local media reports that police launched a murder investigation after an autopsy found he was bound by the wrists and injected down his throat.

Percikli and Demir were arrested by police after being identified on CCTV footage. Basak fled to Georgia and Sariyildiz and Fatih Erginoglu traveled to Cyprus.

Percikli and Demir remain in detention while police prepare to file a Red Bulletin request calling for the arrests of Basak, Sariyildiz and Erginoglu, reports CCN Turk.
