An eight-year-old child was killed by a Russian missile on Friday in western Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk region, a rarely attacked part of the country located hundreds of kilometers from the front lines.

“On August 11 at around 11:00 am (8:00 am GMT), the Russian army fired missiles at infrastructure in the Ivano-Frankivsk region,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said on Telegram.
According to the same source, one of the rockets hit a house where a family with three children lived.
“An eight-year-old boy died as a result of the bombardment,” the prosecution concluded, suggesting rescuers are trying to determine if there are other victims under the rubble.
According to the head of the regional administration, Svitlana Onychtchouk, the injured child was hospitalized in critical condition.
“The doctors did everything possible, but unfortunately it was not possible to save the child’s life,” she added in a video uploaded to Telegram.
She also reminded the population to seek shelter in the event of an air raid.
“Wherever you live, take care of your safety and that of your loved ones,” she said.
Western Ukraine is much less often the target of Russian bombing than the rest of the country, the front stretching for about a thousand kilometers in the north-east, east and south of the country.
