If it weren’t for the Mital affair, the Rouge et Or coach would have done very well

The Université Laval Rouge et Or football team started their training camp on Friday morning and despite the historic season the team has just finished, it was the very special case of their star receiver Kevin Mital that drew attention.

Rouge et Or head coach Glen Constantin is aware that the attention is not necessarily in the ideal place. Recall that his 24-year-old star player will plead guilty to a “lesser offence” in Quebec Municipal Court on September 7.

“It is certain that there are behaviors among our players that we do not want to see. It can create situations like the ones we see now. It’s a distraction and it’s not the image we want to convey of the team. Everyone makes mistakes, but it’s not the opening of the camp that we want,” he hinted after the first training session of almost three hours.

Still, that first day of camp was dominated by whoever won the title of the nation’s top college football player last year.

“If we know all the facts, things may change and we don’t want to punish him before the legal sanction. There will likely be sanctions and there will be decisions in due course,” Constantin explained.

As for Mital’s teammates, we didn’t want to comment on the situation. “It’s important for us to focus on football, and at the football level, it’s still football,” said quarterback Arnaud Desjardins.

Université Laval Rouge et Or are scheduled to start their season on August 25 against the Vert & Or in Sherbrooke. The team’s new artificial turf field should be ready for occupancy on the same day.
