Retired NFL star JJ Watt still hasn’t forgotten how to pitch in as he played Jamie Carragher in a friendly against Manchester City on Friday before Burnley.

Watt and his wife, former US women’s soccer striker Kealia, invested in Burnley last May before the club returned to the Premier League.

And the pair were present at Turf Moor on Friday, where NFL legend Watt Carragher playfully attacked when the latter unsuccessfully threw a ball at Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville.

Ahead of Burnley’s opening game in the top flight, Watt touched the pitch at Turf Moor before Friday night’s encounter with Pep Guardiola’s treble-winners.

JJ and Kealia Watt announced their investment in Burnley in May after the club were promoted

“I’m happy for our fans, I’m happy for our club, I’m happy for the boys,” he told NBC Sports before the game.

‘For [chariman] Alan [Pace], for all the hard work everyone has put in. And what I’m most looking forward to is the atmosphere. I think this place is electric, I think our fans are ready to just go crazy. We stopped at a pub on the way there and I can promise you they’re about to go crazy.

Watt, a surefire Pro Football Future Hall of Famer, was also asked if he’d rather take care of his team than take to the field himself

“It’s a lot more nerve wracking, I can tell you that.” I have no control. I’m sitting up there holding K’s hand and Alan next to me and we bump into each other because I can’t help it.

As a player, you can go out there and make a difference, you can be the cause. Here we just sit back and watch. But the best part for us is our manager Vincent Kompany. We’ve brought in some incredible players and the style he plays, the tactics he executes and the way he gets these guys to play together with that fluid football. It’s really beautiful and we love it.’

JJ retired from football last year and has devoted himself to football ever since. In May he embarked on a pub crawl in Burney as the club celebrated its promotion.
