So said the couple’s grandson, Josh Carter, in an interview with People magazine.

“It’s clear they’re in their final chapter,” he said.

The Carter family and a medical team are constantly present at Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s home in the state of Georgia.

Mr. Carter is now 98 years old; his wife celebrated her 96th birthday on August 18th.

Last February, the Carter Center announced that the former president had started palliative care.

Three months later, we learned that the former first lady was suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. If Ms Carter is struggling with symptoms of dementia, the ex-president would still be in his right mind, says Josh Carter.

“He’s just tired. He is almost 99 years old but he fully understands all the wishes he has received and has felt all the love bestowed upon him by loved ones and the populace,” claims Jimmy Carter’s grandson.

For her part, Rosalynn Carter knows she has dementia and has signed documents confirming her condition.

“Most of the time she knows who we are, that we are her family. “My grandmother still has the ability to create new memories,” notes Josh Carter.

Still, he admits that his grandmother has several memory lapses, which makes it particularly difficult for his grandfather.

“On the other hand, they have been through everything that can be together. I think the best part is that they are still together. They’re still holding hands. It’s just fantastic!” testified the couple’s grandson.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary last July. This is a record in the history of the US President.
