Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy said Sunday that former President Donald Trump should pull out of the 2024 presidential campaign because he will lose to President Joe Biden.

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Cassidy said he believes the federal case against Trump’s misuse of classified documents is “almost a bull’s eye” and he doesn’t think “Americans will vote for anyone who… was convicted”.

The Louisiana MP was then asked by the broadcaster’s Kasie Hunt if Trump should be dropped from the race, and the answer was yes.

‘I think so. But that’s up to him, of course,” Cassidy replied. “I mean, you’re just asking my opinion.” But he’s going to lose to Joe Biden if you look at the current polls.”

Cassidy has previously been critical of Trump and was one of seven Republican senators who seceded from his party and voted to convict the ex-president when he was charged with inciting a riot.

On CNN, Cassidy added that as a Republican, he believes “any Republican on this stage in Milwaukee” will do a better job than Biden.

Milwaukee will host the first Republican primary debate on Wednesday, which Trump is expected to skip.

“And that’s why I want one of them to win,” Cassidy continued. “If former President Trump gets the nomination but fails to win a general, that means we’re going to have four more years of policies leading to very high inflation, a loss of purchasing power for the average American of the equivalent of $10,000.” led to many other things that I believe have been detrimental to the future of our country.”

Cassidy expressed that he would still vote for Trump over Biden or any other Democrat on the list.

Biden, 80, announced his re-election bid in April.

“I’m going to vote Republican,” Cassidy told Hunt. “But my threshold question for any person who wants to be our country’s leader is, Will you take care of the issues that lie ahead?”

Citing Social Security as an example, the Louisiana Republican said, “Both Biden and Trump have the same policy on Social Security, for example, which is to do nothing.”

Cassidy said that “at least” some of the other GOP contestants are speaking out on the subject.

“Honestly, I have a different approach than them.” But at least they’re talking about it,” he noted.

Cassidy did not directly answer the question of whether it will ultimately be a mistake that Trump skipped the first debate.

He said to Hunt, “Oh, I think the debate is important.”

Cassidy was referring to something that former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, one of Trump’s rivals for 2024, said shortly before on CNN’s State of the Union.

That Trump may not even be “qualified to be the next President of the United States” due to a violation of the 14th Amendment.

“A number of legal scholars said he was disqualified for his actions on January 6,” Hutchinson told Hunt.

Cassidy called Hutchinson a “great guy,” noting that he said, “Some legal scholars believe he’s disqualified under the 14th Amendment.”

“I’m not sure if that’s true, but I’m not a lawyer — which means that the people you see on this stage, one of them, most likely will be the presidential candidate,” Cassidy said.

“And I think any of them will be better than Joe Biden,” he continued. “So if you’re worried about the future of our country, watch this debate, find your candidate and support them,” Cassidy instructed.
