Nashville SC midfielder Dax McCarty joked that he still had a small win to go on Saturday night as he posed with Lionel Messi’s jersey.

McCarty and Nashville suffered a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Inter Miami in Saturday’s League Cup final, but he took to social media to claim: “The night wasn’t a total loss.”

McCarty posted a picture of him holding Messi’s shirt from the game while posing with thumbs up and a smile. With that, he reveals he beat his teammates for the honor of taking home the World Champion’s jersey.

McCarty’s wife Jen also chimed in by posting the same photo and responding to a fan who bizarrely claimed the shirt worn by the game smelled of cologne.

“We smelled it,” Jen captioned the picture. “It smells like he’s sweating straight cologne.”

McCarty and his teammates fought an intense battle, pressuring Inter Miami for several stages throughout the game before finally losing 10-9 on penalties.

McCarty, 36, has played 27 games for Nashville this season and has two assists so far.

A true MLS veteran, he has played nearly 489 games in the US premier league and playoffs during a career that has included the Chicago Fire, Nashville, DC United and the New York Red Bulls.

While McCarty seems overjoyed after narrowly missing out on Nashville’s first ever trophy, he will quickly turn his attention to the chance of chasing another trophy.

On August 26, Nashville resumes regular-season MLS play with a game against Atlanta United.

Nashville currently sits fourth in the MLS Eastern Conference with a record of 11-5-8 and 38 points.
