Armengol spoke Catalan, Basque and Galician and did not explicitly do so in Valencian, earning him criticism from the PP and now earning demand from the Valencian Socialists. “The Catalan-Valencian definition is the right one and we will claim it,” said Puig.

The Valencian Language Academy (AVL), the regulator of Valencian, passed a statement in 2005 stating that Valencian and Catalan are the same language.
