A 19-year-old young man has been charged in Douai (northern France) with violence that caused “brain death” to the 16-month-old daughter of his companion, we have learned from prosecutors and the information confirmed by Voice of the North.
The man was remanded in custody after being charged on Sunday with “violent violence against a minor of fifteen, causing permanent disability by a person in authority,” Douai prosecutor Frédéric Fourtoy told AFP.
The qualification received from the coroner is likely to change very soon when the child is officially pronounced dead, he explained.
The emergency services intervened on Friday afternoon in the deprived Roseraie neighborhood to resuscitate the child who was admitted to the intensive care unit of the CHR in Lille. The mother, who was absent at the time of the crime, was exonerated.
The suspect, known to the courts for drug use, underwent a “cannabis screening, which came up positive,” according to prosecutors.
