On Tuesday she won the first set 6-0 against Clara Tauson from Denmark and her opponent then gave up. The two young ladies are old rivals, having often faced each other in the juniors.
Fernandez is on the rise in Ohio. She won her first match of the competition in straight sets 6-0 and 6-2 against the Czech Linda Noskova.
In her duel of the day, the 72nd player in the world won all rallies that started with her first serve attempts. She was also the 90th WTA World Ranking athlete three times, the same number of times.
For their quarter-final duel in Cleveland, Fernandez meets the winner of the game between the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina and the German Tatjana Maria.
Marino is just passing through Chicago
At the tournament in Chicago, Canada’s Rebecca Marino lost in straight sets 7:6 (4) and 1:6 in her first round duel against Italian Lucia Bronzetti.
The 32-year-old Toronto native has not been lucky enough to win the main draw at a WTA event since the Birmingham tournament in late June.
Marino saw Bronzetti, the fifth seeded in the competition, serve three times. The maple leaf representative missed her only chance to break.
