Robert Irwin spooked his fans this week when he posted a wild video of himself catching a snake and a cane toad in a pair of thongs during a camping trip.

The 19-year-old wildlife warrior shared an Instagram clip of him fishing for a keel snake under some wooden steps near his campsite.

Steve Irwin’s son showed the small black snake coiling around his hand.

‘That is so cool. Check it out,” Robert said as he brought the animal closer to the camera.

The snake suddenly darted forward and Robert flinched before he could get a better grip on the reptile.

The young conservationist then revealed that cane toads were also under the boards.

“They’re actually extremely poisonous,” Robert said as he picked up one of the toads.

He explained that most animals would die trying to eat the introduced species of toad, but the keelback is one of the few native animals that can resist its venom.

Then Robert took the snake into the bush and, still in his thongs, released it into the wild.

“What a pretty snake. So cool. See you mate,” he remarked as the snake slid away.

Many fans were shocked by both Robert’s choice of footwear and his handling of the animals.

One commenter wrote: “I’m glad you’re in your safety thongs Rob.”

Another expressed what Aussie Robert looked like: “Tell me you’re Australian without telling me you’re Australian,” they wrote, followed by a thong and snake-shaped emoji.

Many others, mostly non-Australians, were shocked that Robert had handled the “poisonous” cane toad.

“Robert: *mentions that the frog is poisonous* Also, Robert: sets out to collect it,” wrote one comment.

Another fan echoed his sentiment while also paying tribute to his father, Steven Irwin: “This frog is extremely poisonous.” *Let me save it for you* This guy is definitely Steve’s kid!’

While eating cane toads is extremely poisonous, they generally cannot poison anyone unless, like Robert, they touch the glands on their backs that secrete bufotoxin.

Robert shared another close-up wildlife encounter while on his camping trip last week.

He and his girlfriend Rorie Buckey recently had an encounter with a giant Huntsman spider.

The conservationist posted a video on Instagram of the arachnid walking across the roof of his tent and preparing to pounce on it.

“He’s about to molt. Can he skin somewhere else?’ says Robert in the footage.

Suddenly, the spider makes a giant leap out of the tent and lands on the ground, giving the lovebirds and their friends the fright of their lives.

“Oh my God,” they both scream at the same time.

Luckily, the couple was in no real danger because, despite their creepy appearance, the huntsman spider is harmless to humans.

“Just an average night at an Australian campsite,” Robert wrote alongside the video.
