An attempted attack by Kiev on “civilian targets on the territory of the Russian Federation was foiled,” the Defense Ministry said on Telegram.

“The missile was detected and destroyed by air defense systems over the area of the Kaluga region southwest of the Russian capital,” the same source added.

The Russian Defense Ministry did not provide any further details on the target locations and did not provide any information on whether the missile’s destruction had resulted in damage or casualties.

Russian state news agency TASS also reported, citing air services, that Moscow’s Vnukovo and Domodedovo international airports were closed to air traffic early Friday.

The Kaluga region borders the Moscow region, which Russian authorities said has been attacked by Ukrainian drones several times in the past few days.

The Russian government in the annexed Crimea also reported in the early hours of Friday morning that it had shot down drones off the peninsula.

“According to preliminary data, several drones were destroyed over the sea near Cape Chersonese,” said Governor Mikhail Razvojayev.

The cape is located in the southwest of the peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014, about 10 km from Sevastopol, home port of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

“The emergency services did not find any damage to civilian infrastructure,” the official added.

Ukraine on Thursday congratulated itself on conducting a rare commando operation in annexed Crimea and raising the national flag there, a symbolic success in what Moscow declared impregnable on Independence Day.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian military intelligence claimed responsibility for destroying a Russian surface-to-air missile system on the peninsula.
