A Tennessee teacher who was previously named “Teacher of the Month” has been arrested and charged with aggravated rape of a student.

Casey McGrath, 28, was arrested by local Hamilton County police last Friday after being suspended in March while investigators investigated claims she had “inappropriate physical contact with a student” at Central High School.

The Aug. 14 indictment against McGrath said she engaged in sexual activity with a person between the ages of 13 and 18 on May 1, 2022.

The court filing accused the teacher of “unlawfully and knowingly” engaging in “sexual penetration with a person at least 13 but under the age of 18” and noted that she was “at least 10 years older than that.” victim”.

McGrath was released on bail after posting $10,000 bail and will appear again in Hamilton County Criminal Court on September 6 to plead her charges.

Aggravated statutory rape, a Class D felony, carries a sentence of two to 12 years in prison under state penal guidelines.

The 28-year-old was voted “Teacher of the Month” by the students, according to a now-deleted article in the school newspaper.

Hamilton County Schools spokesman Steve Doremus told News 9 that McGrath is no longer a county employee.

McGrath has worked at Central High School since 2020 and was previously employed at East Ridge Middle School.
