OpenAI is releasing a version of its popular ChatGPT tool specifically for businesses, the company announced Monday, as an AI arms race continues to grow across American businesses.

OpenAI introduced the new service, dubbed “ChatGPT Enterprise,” in a company blog post and said it would be available for purchase for business customers starting Monday. The new offering promises “enterprise-grade security and privacy” combined with “the most powerful version of ChatGPT yet” for companies looking to jump on the Generative AI bandwagon.

“We believe that AI can support and improve every aspect of our work lives and make teams more creative and productive,” the blog post reads. “Today is another step towards an AI assistant for work that helps with every task, is individually tailored to your company and protects your company data.”

ChatGPT Enterprise’s early clients include fintech startup Block, cosmetics giant Estee Lauder Companies and professional services firm PwC.

OpenAI’s much-anticipated announcement comes at a time when the company says employees at over 80% of Fortune 500 companies are already using it, according to its analysis of accounts linked to corporate email domains have started using ChatGPT since it was publicly launched late last year.

Prior to the launch of ChatGPT Enterprise, a number of well-known companies, including JPMorgan Chase, had imposed temporary restrictions on ChatGPT usage in the workplace.

However, ChatGPT Enterprise is addressing one of the core issues that led to the workplace action: privacy and security concerns. Previously, some company leaders had raised concerns that employees were entering proprietary information into ChatGPT and that sensitive information could potentially show up elsewhere as output from the tool. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise announcement blog post states that it “does not train on your business data or conversations, and our models do not learn from your usage.”

OpenAI did not publicly disclose the pricing levels for ChatGPT Enterprise, instead inquiring prospective business customers to contact the sales team.

“We look forward to sharing an even more detailed roadmap with potential customers and further developing ChatGPT Enterprise based on your feedback,” the company said. “We will involve as many companies as possible in the coming weeks.”

In July, Microsoft unveiled a business-specific version of its AI-powered Bing tool called Bing Chat Enterprise, promising much of the same security guarantees ChatGPT Enterprise is now touting — namely, that users’ chat data won’t be used to train AI models.

Microsoft also previously announced a multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI. It’s not immediately clear how the new enterprise AI tools will compete with each other.
