Tajikistan: Death toll from torrential rain rises to 21

At least 21 people have died in three days in Tajikistan from torrential rains that caused mudslides, rockfalls and landslides, according to a new report from authorities in this mountainous Central Asian country.

“There are 21 dead” in three cities in central Tajikistan, a spokesman for the Emergency Situation Committee of Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic bordering Afghanistan and China, told AFP.

According to the same source, 17 people lost their lives in Vakhdat, two in Roudaki and two in Varzob, three towns on the outskirts of Dushanbe, the capital of this country with around ten million inhabitants. No injuries have been reported at this time.

On Monday, the Emergency Situation Committee initially reported 13 deaths after the torrential rains and warned of the high risk of new landslides, mudslides and rockfalls.

Tajikistan, a poor and mountainous country, is regularly struck by deadly natural disasters. In February, 19 people died in avalanches.
