Unfortunately, the illness ultimately ended his acting career as the star lost his ability to walk.

First, Bill was seen needing a cane, then a cane, before being forced to use a wheelchair to get around.

In his will he left his estate in trust to his widow and children Jamie and Sophie.

He also named his grandchildren as some of the discretionary beneficiaries who could inherit from his estate at the discretion of his wife and children.

During his time in Albert Square, the star received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Arthur, who was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit.

A London boy, Bill was born in Hackney in 1940 before being evacuated to Gloucestershire during the Second World War.

After his national service in the Royal Air Force, he managed to save enough money to attend drama school after working for P&O.

Before moving into television, Bill starred in successful West End productions.

He starred in The Sweeney with Denis Waterman, Dad’s Army, The Bill and Casualty and also appeared in films such as Tale of the Mummy.

Elsewhere on the soap this week, a legendary character made the surprise return in flashbacks from 2014.

Tuesday night’s episode saw Ricky Norwood reprise his role as the popular Fatboy Chubb after he was murdered eight years ago.

Fatboy died in grisly circumstances in the 2015 Christmas Carol when the character died in a car due to a mix-up.

He died off-screen after Ronnie Mitchell arranged for their enemy Vincent Hubbard to be sent to the car destroyer, but Fatboy was accidentally trapped in the trunk of the car and killed instead.

In the latest EastEnders episode, Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) came face to face with her ex George Knight (Colin Salom).

Cindy eventually told George the truth and viewers were treated to flashbacks from Marbella, Spain in 2014.

The flashback showed her leaving him and her daughters after learning that her daughter Lucy had died.

During a secret visit to the square, Cindy was seen watching Ian (Adam Woodyatt) from a distance as he mourned the terrible loss.

Cindy was then approached by DCI Mary Nicholls, her witness supervisor, and forced to get into her car.

While they were talking in the car, they were briefly interrupted by Arthur “Fatboy” Chubb.

He asked for the time and started talking about meeting his friends and getting a kebab.

He also mentioned his “retired” girlfriend and landlady, Dorothy “Dot” Branning (the late June Brown).

Fans were excited about the characters’ return, writing on Twitter: “This flashback story is so good!”
