Fatal shots of joy: man died at his own wedding

A joyous event turns into a day of mourning: in Jordan, a 20-year-old groom was shot dead at his own wedding. Following the incident, activists called on the country’s population to boycott this way of expressing joy in celebrations, state news agency Petra reported on Thursday. The custom costs the lives of innocent people.

According to media reports, the young man was hit by a stray bullet during his wedding ceremony in the south of the country on Wednesday. He was initially taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound. He later succumbed to his injuries there. The shooter was therefore arrested. It was initially unclear how the victim’s fiancée and other relatives felt following the incident.

In Jordan, using firearms in public is a crime. However, there and in other countries in the region, people continue to die as a result of the practice of firing shots into the air at weddings and other celebrations. In 2020, a Jordanian also died this way on the day he was released from prison: the fatal bullet came from the pistol of his cousin – who was actually celebrating.
